Networking Importance

Image
What is networking? Networking is the action of collaborating with others in order to swap information and create a professional contact. Networking can help with many things, the main thing being that creating those connections can help with getting an internship. It also helps to meet new people because no one knows which one of those people can suggest to you for something new like a job. There are many opportunities to network. It can happen before and after class, it could happen during events, it could even happen while eating lunch. When networking there are many different groups that those people will fall under. They could fall under school, work, community and even family.  There are two different kinds of networks. The first one is a closed network. This means that those people most likely know each other, and they can offer the same information as well as resources and opportunities. This is one that gives a narrow range of opportunities given. There are advantages to h...

Our Language Within our Writing

Image
There are many different ways we communicate with each other. The way we talk with friends is different from the way we talk to our coworkers. It is also different to how we talk to our parents. Everyday we change the way we speak to others, that being either going in and out of languages or the way we talk with our dialects. Having to filter the way we talk can be hard, especially within our English classes. It is always hard to maintain a formal or academic tone within our assignments. I have always wondered if we could bring our own voices into our papers without getting points taken off because the tone isn’t formal. It is interesting to learn from the text we had to read this week, that the way we learn to write in school is called standard written english. I would’ve never thought that the way we were taught in school would be the standard and that it's not an objective criteria set. From the reading, I saw this, “Instead it is an ideal that centers a ‘norm’ often conceived ...

Visual Rhetoric

Image
What is visual rhetoric? Visual rhetoric means an efficient way of communicating through visual elements. That could be images, and the fonts of the texts. This skill helps with analyzing these images and understanding their form and meaning. As a student understanding what visual rhetoric means helped me for past assignments. I was able to analyze images and understand their meaning and the form. Since entering college there have been so many changes to how I have to learn things and the ways I should approach something new. As students we are constantly online and learning new things as well as adapting to all the new changes happening to the writing technology. As we are adapting to the new changes and we are looking at artifacts like websites and playing online games, we are learning how to read critically and how to make assumptions about those websites and those online games. The assumptions we make as we look at these websites and online games are about gender, age and other c...

Digital Rhetoric

Image
What does rhetoric mean? It means speaking or writing persuasively to affect the audience. That can be a student wanting to persuade another student that they should switch lunches or snacks. Rhetoric is used in writing both in and out of school. So rhetoric would change if it was digital since not everyone is trying to be persuasive. Some people that are online are just trying to inform others while some people are trying to persuade others. Now what does digital rhetoric mean? It means a form of communication that is digital and isn’t focused on persuasion but on expressing oneself. It is also focused on building communities based off similar interests. This could lead to many different categories of writing. Those being based of what the writing is attempting to do. This could be an email sent to a professor excusing an absence or sending condolences to someone. It can also be lab reports we write or nurses writing plans for how to care for a patient and even admission essays for co...

Collaboration on Social Media

Being on the web is something that everyone eventually knows how to navigate. There are many different reasons why people are on the web. Those reasons could be that someone is trying to find information about a disaster that happened, they are trying to connect with their friends and family, or they could just be surfing the web and not looking for anything in particular. Collaborating on the web can be seen as different things but the main things that are considered as collaborating on the web are liking, commenting, tagging, and even posting a blog. That is also known as being a part of the web’s collective intelligence. When collaborating or being apart of the web we tend to gravitate to a group. Those groups could be made up of friends or strangers that we have befriended. Within these communities they have come together for many different reasons, that could be that they wanted to put information out about a certain topic. They also could’ve gotten together because they all lik...

Social Media

Image
What is Social Media? Social Media is a considerable way of interacting with others as well as networking. Since there are a multitude of platforms created, social media has grown. There are many platforms that gain popularity and maintain it, while others gain and lose that popularity.  In 2002, the year that I was born, there was a social media platform that was gaining a lot of popularity. That platform was called Friendster . Despite the platform gaining a lot of attention, the developers weren't prepared, and because of that their servers were impacted. The following years, 2003 - 2005, seemed to be the year where new and different platforms became available to the public. Myspace was introduced in 2003 and then in 2005 YouTube was introduced. What made these platforms differ from Friendster was that with Myspace users were allowed to customize their public profiles. The difference with YouTube was that they allowed users to post any content they wanted without restrictions....
